Thank you for your interest in the Stillbrook Lodge Independent Montessori Primary School. We are excited to launch this school in the Bournemouth area, and look forward to helping as many children as we can to learn using the methods developed by Dr Maria Montessori.
The School is opening in January 2010, and will be the first Montessori primary school in the Bournemouth area.
Has your child already been to or is currently in a Montessori nursery?
Currently there are over 500 Montessori nursery places in the area, and many children in these nurseries thrive on the method of education developed by Dr Maria Montessori but have nowhere to continue their education once they reach compulsory school age. For children who have been given the freedom to progress at their own level, many reading fluently at the age of four, then going to school and starting all over learning letters with the rest of the class, this is frustrating and hinders this progress. Stillbrook Lodge will provide the opportunity for children to continue to progress at a level suitable for them.
No Montessori experience?
Stillbrook Lodge is also a great start for any child, whether they have been to a Montessori nursery or not. If you have not had any exposure to the Montessori method, check out the Montessori and Curriculum pages of our website which will give you an overview of the way Montessori can help your child excel in their learning.
Montessori is not like mainstream schooling that follows the National Curriculum.
Don't worry! Children attending Stillbrook Lodge will cover all areas of the National Curriculum and more. However, because we will follow the Montessori method of education, children will be able to learn at a pace that is set by themselves, not by a national standard. If they are slower at learning maths or language, there is no need to worry. We all know that if you force someone to learn something they won't learn it well, but if you have a willing student, keen and ready to learn, they will pick things up in no time. It is like that in Montessori. A child who may hold back in reading and letter recognition can, when ready, learn all the letters and be reading fluently within a month!
Qualified and experienced Montessori teachers will direct and help your child to become independendent, self-confident, motivated learners and will remain with them for 3 years in each class.
Lessons at the school are a little different. They are not short in length, because often a child is just grasping a concept when the school bell rings and it is time to move on to another subject. At Stillbrook Lodge, lessons are called 'work cycles' and last between 2.5 and 3 hours so that the child is given the chance to finish learning something without being interrupted.
We will be moving into our premises in early December, with the school opening in January 2010. We are excited to be opening and we hope to see you there in January.
